Buckthorn Removal
What is buckthorn?
Common and glossy buckthorn are non-native plants that are problematic in many areas throughout Minnesota. Originating in Europe, buckthorn was initially introduced as a hedge plant. It grows in dense clumps of understory to mid-canopy tall shrubs.
Why is it a problem?
Since buckthorn does not originate in the Midwest, it has no natural checks on its growth and reproduction. Buckthorn can quickly form dense thickets in all manner of different landscapes, from forests to backyards to wetland edges. It will crowd out native shrubs and trees, disrupting understory plant communities. By outcompeting and shading out native species, buckthorn can create an array of problems:
Degrades wildlife and bird habitat
Increases erosion risk by shading out ground cover plants
Threatens natural areas, making them less resistant to disturbance
Serves as a host to pests such as crown rust fungus
Takes over open backyard spaces
Blocks light and moisture
What can you do?
Common and glossy buckthorn are listed as Restricted Noxious Weeds by the state of Minnesota. It is illegal to import, sell, or transport this species in Minnesota.
