Conservation Reserve Program
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a program run through the US Department of Agriculture that focuses on conserving natural habitat on private lands. Since its inception in 1985, farmers and landowners have preserved more than 20 million acres of sensitive soil and habitat through this program.
CRP Land Management
CRP land management requires landowners to restore and manage native plant communities and habitats on parts of their land that are deemed ‘ecologically sensitive’. Participants enroll in 10-15 year long contracts designed to re-establish native communities, prevent soil erosion, and maintain wildlife habitat. In turn, participants receive a rental payment from the Farm Service Agency which administers the program for managing their land for habitat. This program is one of the largest private-lands conservation programs in the United States, and continues to grow.
